Mariam Chelidze_2017

Abstract

Abstract taken from the full text of the paper (PDF, page 5).

The master's thesis deals with the temple Kupelhale, less famous but interesting type of the temple in Georgian architecture, namely the Birth temple of the Virgin Mary situated in the village of Sacramouli. The work deals with the peculiarities of the Birth temple of the Virgin Mary in terms of both typological and the architectural-decorative design. It is important that existence of this type of temple is confirmed in almost every stage of the medieval Georgian architecture. Based on the special literature, we have reviewed the stages of development of the type of temple Kupelhale and we tried to find the period of construction of the Sacramouli Temple using the typological features.

As comparison revealed, the Sacramouli Temple has more general characteristics with the temples of XVIII-XIX centuries than with the churches of the early period. After comparing the plan, for more accuracy, we compared the church with the brick churches and their decor of this period. These temples are Bodorna Virgin Mary Temple, the Virgin Mary of Manavi, Archangel of Upper Machkhaan, Gurjaani Kvashveti and Melaani Trinity. It is also interesting fact that these churches belong to the type of Kupelhale. The decorative roots are mainly crosses and arcades, which are formed by bending the wall surface, but their positioning is different. The comparison reveals that the decoration of the Sacramouli Temple reveals more common features with the same type temples of the XVIII-XIX centuries.

We think that the date of construction of the Sacramouli Temple should not be later that the middle of the XVIII century.
