Abstract taken from the PDF of the thesis (page 6); source: Ilia State University repository.Structure and Semantics of Idiomatic Expressions in Georgian Language (Comparative Analysis based on English, Modern Greek and Russian Data) The scope of research is to provide structural-semantic analysis of idioms in Georgian language and, as far as possible, to compare the material obtained with idioms in Russian, Modern Greek and English languages. The research is subdivided into theoretical and practical parts. The structural semantic description of idioms is based on the Fraser‟s classification and the study of their transformational possibilities within the framework of generative grammar. We think that in spite of semantic unity Georgian idiom can be considered as a composite according to its morphosyntactic features.
Thus, it is possible to assess and determine the degree of its “frozeness”. The theoretical part of research includes analysis of material obtained within the framework of structural and generative grammars. The mentioned attitudes has been conditioned by the idea that Georgian idiom can be considered as a composite unit according to its morphosyntactic features, which have an influence on the semantic indipendency of its constituents and syntactic transformation. Thus, we paid attention to the projection levels, case filter and theta-criterium, which characterize grammatical structure of Georgian language. The research consists of five parts: The first part includes historical description of research issues in Georgian, Russian, English and Modern Greek linguistics, especially, of those theories, which are important from our view-point.
The second part includes the structural analysis of idiom database. This chapter covers differential features of idioms based on their two-, three-, four- and five- word-constituents. Every constituent can be characterized by the defined morphosyntactic features.
