Pragmacommunicavite Aspects of Emotional Discourse in Italian and Georgian Languages

Nana Lomia_2012

Abstract

Abstract taken from the PDF of the thesis (page 5); source: Ilia State University repository.

The subject of the study of this thesis is the verbal and non verbal description of the processes of emotional reaction and emotional state in Italian literature of 20th century, using semantic and structural dynamics and the pragmatic analysis. A particular accent is made on the pragmatic aspect, i.e. on the information implied in the description of the emotions by the addresser and perception of the information by the recipient. Close connections between the connotation, implication, presupposition and subtext of the literary discourse are taken into consideration. The processes of nomination are studied with reference to the personality of the addresser, taking into account his/her social status, sex, education and culture.

We attach importance to not only the description and expression of emotions in Italian literary discourses, but also the expression of the characteristics in the translation of the same texts in the Georgian language, in order to establish convergences and divergences between the two not-related languages. These characteristics are studied using the interpretative theory of the translation. The topicality of the subject is conditioned by the expressive function of expression of emotions, and the study of the expressive function, though not well studied, is rather important. Moreover, the theoretical study of the expression of the emotions in the literary discourse has not been carried out until now from the viewpoint of compared analysis between the Italian and Georgian languages.

Cognitive approach towards the task is a topical question, characterized by interdisciplinary approach towards the research of linguistic phenomena, which makes it possible to examine all aspects of the subject of study. The methods used in the study of the subject of the thesis are the following: the synchrony method, methods of description, classification, comparison, stylistics and structural methods, also method of semantic and structural modeling and communication method. The theoretical value of the thesis is to contribute to the further development of the theory of nomination. The description of the semantics of the processes of the emotional expression can be used to describe the emotional discourses in other languages.

The thesis can contribute to the development of the studies in literary language, historical linguistics and pragmatics and the history of the people that reflect a range of the tasks of modern linguistics. The findings of the thesis can be used in lexicographical practice, formation of the culture of individual speech and can be used as the lecture material for a course in paralinguistic, culture of the relations, general linguistics, theoretical or practical linguistics of the translation, lexicology and stylistics.
