Art and Artists in the terms of the Roman Catholic Church’s patronage – on the example of projects made by Michelangelo

Giorgi Cheishvili_2014

Abstract

Abstract taken from the full text of the paper (PDF, page 4).

The research – “Art and Artists in the terms of the Roman Catholic Church’s patronage – on the example of projects made by Michelangelo” – isa sort of attempt to represent all the tendencies that had been existed in XV-XVI century Western culture and to state clearly the relationship chronicles between artists and the Roman Catholic Church, which is directly connected with different periods of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s works and their peculiarities. The goal of the project is to point out the contribution made by the Roman Catholic Church in the Renaissance Period, in order to show the important role played by strong religious institution in development of art (maybe even unconsciously) andto respresent how the Roman Catholic Church did not turned into censorship mechanism, no matter of its beliefs, in consideration of the epoch and humanist ideology.

There is a completely different situation in Georgia in 21st century, in the country where elesiastics and the social groups sharing church’s positions are oppressing artists and art and they act like some kind of censorship mechanism. In conclusion we can say that in the limits of this research the attitude of Roman Catholic Church’s leaders to art and artists, which had relation with sculptor, artist and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti, was much progressive, than this aggressive attitude of Georgian religious and social groups to contemporary, non-conjunctive art and artists.
